The Barolo "Capalot" 2017 from Walter Viberti's Santamaria winery is produced with grapes from the municipality of La Morra.
The Santamaria winery is located in the northern part of the municipality of La Morra and cultivates only the Nebbiolo grape, from which Barolo, Barolo Riserva, and Langhe Nebbiolo are produced. All the vineyards are located in the Capalot subzone, where wines of great elegance are born. Walter produces wine naturally: in the vineyard, only copper and sulfur are used, while in the cellar, fermentations occur without the aid of selected yeasts, and the wines age in steel or, in the case of Barolo, in medium-sized barrels.
The Barolo Capalot 2017 is absolutely a best buy in terms of quality and price! From a taste perspective, it surprised me quite a bit as I found the elegance and "lightness" typical of this terroir, but at the same time, density and dark hints of blackberry and cassis that I usually associate with other areas. The sip is beautiful, full, round, with deep and characterful tannins. Regarding the vintage, I found consistency: the hot and dry 2017 is recognizable but does not overpower the nature of a great Barolo.
